As well as being super tasty, these treats have a range of health benefits – the main benefit being their anti-inflammatory properties. ‘Inflammation is the most common source of aches and pains for all dog breeds at all ages.’ canna-pet.com (2015). If you would like to find out why and how inflammation occurs, read this excellent article from canna-pet.
In this recipe, the combination of turmeric, flax seeds and oats can aid in the treatment of many inflammatory conditions such as: arthritis, inflammatory bowel disease, conjunctivitis, dermatitis, pancreatitis, panosteitis and masticatory muscle myositis.
Ingredients:
- 40g ground flax seeds
- 400g oats
- 1tsp turmeric
- 1 egg
- Good pinch of black pepper
- 200ml water
Method:
- Pre-heat your oven to 175˚C and line a baking tray with grease-proof paper.
- Combine all the ingredients in a large mixing bowl.
- Knead for 5 minutes.
- Leave the mixture for 10 minutes.
- Roll out to a 0.5cm thickness.
- Use a cookie cutter – there are some great dog-themed ones on the market – to cut out your biscuit shapes and place these on your tray.
- Bake in the oven for around 30 minutes.
Top Tip: Make smaller biscuit shapes for smaller dog breeds. Even though my dogs are medium-sized, they like the biscuit to be broken up for them.
